TY'R MORWYDD (Mulberry House) - The Wales Experience

MULBERRY HOUSE / TY’R MORWYDD

Mulberry House [Ty'r Morwydd in Welsh] is situated close to the town centre of Abergavenny and on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is a fabulous location from which to explore the mountains, river valleys and industrial heritage of South Wales.

HISTORY

TY’R MORWYDD Environmental Study Centre has been teaching advanced field studies to school groups for over 30 years. Ty’r Morwydd (or ‘Mulberry House’ in English) provides environmental education linked to the curriculum for schools, colleges and universities from across the country.

The hallwayThe Centre forms part of an old Georgian town house built over 200 years ago. At one time it was part of the estate owned by the famous Lady Llanover. In 1906 this Grade II listed building became the new home for the Order of St. Michael’s and the Sisters of the Holy Spirit. The convent was extended in 1956 to provide student accommodation. Although strong ties are maintained, the Order of St. Michael’s left Abergavenny in 1976 and the building was purchased by the government owned Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) and became a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in the provision of exam-based environmental education. In 1992, when ILEA was disbanded by the government, ownership was passed to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The Centre has since become a registered charity and is still nationally renowned for the provision of residential environmental education to school groups from across Britain.

In acknowledgement of an important part of its heritage, the home of Ty’r Morwydd /Mulberry House is still known as ‘The Old Convent’.

Mulberry House Residential Conference Centre is a trading subsidiary of the charity Ty'r Morwydd and provides B&B accommodation to education, leisure and tourism groups. Mulberry House offers a comfortable and informal venue for business meetings and conferences with the benefit of a fully catered dining room.

The name ‘Mulberry House’ was inspired by the old and stately Mulberry trees planted in the private gardens of the The Old Convent in Abergavenny over 150 years ago. The trees continue to bear fruit and, when in season, these are used by our chef in a selection of home made preserves and pastries served to guests.

Situated just a short walk from the centre of the historic market town of Abergavenny, Mulberry House is ideally located to access the mountains, rivers, valleys and national parks for which this borders region of Wales is famous.
