ABERGAVENNY AND SURROUNDING AREA
Abergavenny is known as ‘the Gateway to Wales’ and is 3.5 miles from Offa’s Dyke (the ancient border of the English Marcher lords). This agricultural market town, once famous for its cloth and hat making, has served the local farming communities of Monmouthshire and the neighbouring industrial communities of Blaenavon and Ebbw Vale for hundreds of years. The ancient Romans once settled here and the famous Market Hall, which is now home to the legendary ‘Abergavenny Food Festival’ and weekly food and trader markets, was once used as an early form of labour exchange serving the iron and coal-mining industries. The ‘Labour Sales’ were held here in the 19th century and this is documented in ‘Rape of the Fair Country’ by Alexander Cordell (Blorenge Books).
The town of Abergavenny is in a stunning location - surrounded by the Black Mountains, Blorenge and Skirrid Mountains and rests in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
